Noon at Night is a wandering classroom that prototypes creative adaptation to crisis.

Through experimental performance, Noon at Night connects subversive learners and educators in higher education institutions worldwide in solidarity and interdependence. Incubating within the University of Michigan Student Life Sustainability during the 2024-25 academic year, Noon at Night has situated its study and practice at the intersection of climate emergency, grief and imperialism.’

In the academic year 2025, Noon at Night will host a series of public events and workshops at UM-Ann Arbor that immerse students and community members in potential future climate-related crises and create opportunities to practice mutual aid through speculative fiction and performance. Each program will focus on a possible crisis in our near-term future and invite participants to ask: what will I do in this situation and who can I turn to?

Noon at Night Presents: Refuse Refuse Radio

Noon at Night presents a day of participatory climate emergency adaptation workshops, culminating in a speculative fiction radio theatre performance in Winter 2025.

Please join us at University of Michigan-Ann Arbor’s campus Friday, October 11, 2024 to map the unique climate disaster vulnerability among our communities and collectively design creative responses towards adaptation.

Throughout the day, workshop participants will build an acoustic archive of our material and relational discards that will be placed in a time capsule, refusing a condition of panic and precarity and recognizing those things and people that we typically dispose of as integral to our interdependent sustenance. The time capsule will then travel to the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s campus in November 2024, augmented by UW workshop participants, and reemerge as a speculative fiction radio theater performance on both the UM and UW campus radio stations Winter 2025. Prompted by “what-if” scenarios, this experimental participatory performance will dramatize current and impending climate catastrophes – and our ability to adapt together.

Noon at Night, situated within University of Michigan Student Life Sustainability, is in collaboration with participants from University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and non-campus communities.

11a-12:30p – Knowledge Mapping & Instructions to the Future with Jen Rae (Duderstadt Center, Design Lab 1)

1-2:30p – Relaying Breath & Seeding Discard with Shiloh Maples | Lunch (Campus Farm at Matthaei Botanical Gardens, Strawbale House)

3-4:30p – Familial Re-Membering as Policy & Practice (Palmer Commons, 3rd Floor Windows Lounge)

5-6:30p – Screening of Syrus Marcus Ware’s Antarctica, followed by the transmission of a time capsule | Dinner (Palmer Commons, 3rd Floor Windows Lounge)
